Meet Lucy Kemp...
A model, mother, actress, yogi and all-round super star.
Lucy has had an impressive career so far, having worked with the likes of Beyonce, Naomi Campbell and Ben Stiller...to name a few.
She has a can do attitude, a must with two little boys under three!
Her drink of choice is a vodka martini, a leftover from living it up in New York City for 11 years.
You’re Mum to?
Noah, 2yrs 4mo and Haris almost 6 mo.
What have your little boys taught you?
Patience! Although I’m the boss, they’re in charge, if you know what I mean! Especially Noah, who at 2 is a gorgeous boy but learning about his emotions and how to express himself through both speech and action. This can be frustrating for him and can require time and extra special care from me. It’s a different sort of care they need at 2 than before in their lives, their brains are mushrooming and you realise how much learning (and boundary pushing!) they’re doing on a daily basis. _ _
Is motherhood what you envisioned it to be?
I think the most surprising thing for me about being a mum is how much privilege I feel to be given these incredible little humans to love, treasure and teach. I try not to make too many assumptions about what motherhood should or shouldn’t be, but I do know the gratitude I feel is over and above what I ever thought possible!
You come from a family of impeccable genes. Often doing photo shoots along side your mother. Have your little boys been featured with you yet?
Yes! I had one client who used Mum, me and Noah for a couple of campaigns, which was so great! And when Mothers Day rolls around, we get a few requests for shoots. I haven’t done a shoot with both the boys and mum yet, but my good client, a magazine, have already requested availability for us all to shoot for the Christmas issue! I’m so lucky, they’re super special memories.
You’ve had a very successful modeling career. What has been the most memorable shoot to date?
Oh my gosh, that’s a hard one! I’m luck enough to have been working for over 20 years now and I’ve had some incredible opportunities. I’ve done tv commercials with Beyonce and Milla Jovovich, walked catwalks with Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista, shot international campaigns for everything from clothing brands like Gap and Adidas, to beauty brands like Nivea and Schwartzkopf and luxury brands such as Rolex and Porsche. One of the coolest things I did was shoot two scenes with Will Ferrel and Ben Stiller in Zoolander. That was one of my first jobs when I moved to New York when I was 20 years old and it's still one of the best!
What are your hobbies?
I’m a long time yogi and it’s a big part of me. I got certified to teach Bikram yoga 11 years ago, and I have been practicing for almost 15 years. Although I still practice myself, I sadly don’t have time to teach any more, but teaching is a hobby I’ll return to some day. I also study Psychology at university. I’m very interested in the mental health of teenage girls, from my years as a model, I know how hard it can be with body image, expectations and general social pressure and when I’m finished with my studies this is the area I’ll move into.
You're a little Bikram yogi. Do you still get the time to practice? And did you practice during your pregnancies?
Ha! A little about this above. But I absolutely practiced through both pregnancies. I did the pregnancy series in the heated room, which is a little more mellow than the regular Bikram series. Both my babies are yoga babies and they had almost identical births- no drugs and under 7 hours. Although I can’t prove this, I’m absolutely sure it had to do with my long standing Bikram practice.
Since having my boys I’ve had to go from a daily yoga practice to just one, sacred, non-negotiable Saturday morning class a week. Everyone in my family knows I must get to this class, or else mummy loses it!!
It is 5pm (somewhere)… what’s your drink of choice?
I’ll have a glass of wine every night, but my actual drink of choice is a vodka martini with olives. That’s from my 11 years in New York City!
If you could teleport anywhere for 24 hours, where would you go?
To the mountain caves of Nepal. Strangely, before I even knew what they were, I had dreams of prayer flags in a cave. I’m not sure what that means but, I’d start in Nepal.
What is your motto?
What’s your idea of a perfect day?
Early yoga, then home, (where the cleaner’s just left), then off to breakfast with my husband and kids. Playground/beach followed by naps and the newspaper. Then an afternoon of playing with the kids and cooking, followed by a delicious husband-cooked meal, wine, ice cream and early bed! Its pretty much my Sunday each week and its sacred!
Describe yourself as a mum in three words…
Just winging it!
